ELA Curriculum

We are excited to share that our English Language Arts (ELA) curriculum at LAUSD is based on the Core Knowledge Language Arts (CKLA) program. CKLA is a comprehensive and research-based curriculum that builds strong foundations in reading, writing, speaking, and listening—starting from kindergarten and continuing through the elementary grades.

CKLA is designed to support students in two key areas:

  1. Skills Development – Students learn phonics, grammar, and decoding strategies that are essential for fluent reading and writing.

  2. Knowledge Building – Through engaging texts and rich content, students explore history, science, literature, and the arts—helping them connect reading to real-world knowledge.

Why CKLA?

  • Builds strong readers by combining foundational skills with deep content knowledge

  • Encourages vocabulary development and critical thinking

  • Supports all learners, including English learners, through structured, inclusive lessons

  • Aligned with California state standards and LAUSD’s commitment to literacy equity

We believe that with CKLA, every child has the opportunity to become a confident reader, thoughtful writer, and curious learner. Thank you for being our partner in your child's education.
